NTROACH(1) NTROACH(1)
NAME
NTRoach - cockroaches hide under your windows
SYNOPSIS
NTRoach [-hidden]
DESCRIPTION
NTRoach is an adaptation to Windows NT of the popular
X program, xroach.
NTRoach displays disgusting cockroaches on your desktop.
As the original xroach man page states: "These creapy crawlies
scamper around until they find a window to hide under.
Whenever you move or iconify a window, the exposed orthopteras
again scamper for cover."
A technical problem in Windows NT prevents the roaches from
being alerted when a console window has moved, so they
will wisely not hide behind such windows. Also, Windows NT
icons are too small for the roaches to hide behind. If your
desktop consists only of icons and console windows, the
roaches will scamper indefinitely. You may want to leave
at least one small window open, so the roaches will be able
to find some shelter.
OPTIONS
Hiding and re-displaying the NTRoach icon:
By default, NTRoach will display an icon. You can hide
the icon either by starting NTRoach with the parameter
"-hidden", or by selecting "Hide" from the NTRoach
system-menu. The icon will re-appear if another instance
of NTRoach is started.
Settings:
The "NTRoach Settings" Dialog Box allows you to specify
the number, speed, and color of the roaches and roach guts.
If you save these settings, they will be placed in the
System Registry under the key:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Freeware\NTRoach
NTRoach will revert to its original default values
if you delete this key from the Registry.
Roach squishing:
There were some technical problems in implementing squishing
in Windows NT. The original xroach could get mouse
events in the root window even without being the active
application. But in Windows NT, this does not appear to be
possible.
Squishing was therefore implemented as follows: Squishing is
enabled whenever "Squish ON" is selcted from the NTRoach
system-menu. It is disabled when NTRoach looses focus, or if
the mouse is clicked again over the NTRoach icon.
HINT: To enjoy squishing, iconize most of the windows
before enabling squishing. The roaches are too big to
hide behind the icons. For an even bigger advantage, slow
the roaches down before trying to squish them. You can
squish a roach with any mouse button.
